More than a phone

Photographs. I like them. Images have always been incredibly fascinating to me. I like the way they freeze real life and let you observe it without time making it go away. As one who enjoys photography, I like to take part in it and learn as much as possible. I’ve spent several years as a professional photographer and have been published in numerous magazines shooting mostly fashion and food. That, however, was before cell phones had decent cameras in them.

During the frenzy of more megapixels in a phone, I remember thinking how great it was going to be to have phones in our pockets that would essentially replace a decent DSLR camera. After years of promised improvements, I’m still waiting for that day.

Maybe I don’t have the latest and greatest smart phone (I have an iPhone 12 mini) but that should be enough to impress me. It doesn’t. Again, maybe I just haven’t been exposed to the phone that can do it, but I’m still waiting.

As such, I’ve started carrying my trusty old Fuji X100 on bike rides again. I really like the fact that it has all the capacity of a DSLR (sans interchangeable lenses of course) and the APS-C sensor is such a great option for a smaller camera. These photos below are unedited jpegs and straight out of the camera. I know they’re not anything amazing, but if you give them a look, you’ll see more than what a smart phone can do. To me, it’s worth looking like a hipster with a camera slung on my back when I get rewarded with decent quality photographs to remember my rides by.
